Some people practice yoga for the sweat, the challenge and the opportunity to test their physical limitations. Others do it for tranquility and peace of mind: to take back control of their breath and body from a stressful world.
Whatever your objective, don’t allow pain to prevent you from pursuing it.
There are simple solutions to the common aches and pains you experience: from wrist and shoulder pain in chaturanga, to lingering low back pain the day after a class of intensive back bends. Each of these things—along with many other aches and apprehensions—can be eliminated through the integration of a few simple rules of biomechanics.
Attendees will leave the workshop empowered through an understanding of how their individual body’s manage the demands of their yoga practice—and of their life “off the mat.” In addition to exercises and techniques for strong, pain-free movement, participants will also learn how to approach the exercises and techniques they already know in a way that works better for them.
In this 5-hour workshop, learn how to:
Increase range in the hips, knees and ankles—without painful stretching
Eliminate pain in the wrist, elbow and shoulder during planks and inversions
Reduce neck tension and hold the head high with ease
Improve balance and coordination in any pose

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) 8 week series
Are you looking for the ability to better cope with distress, change, workplace stress and transitions in life?
Are you dealing with illness, pain or stress connected with your health and struggle with these issues?
Have you wanted to start a meditation practice to deal with stress or find life balance, but find it challenging or just haven't been able to establish a steady practice?
If you are nodding your head, the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), 8 week course may benefit you. It is a secular and evidence-based stress reduction program.
Through understanding and investigating the triggers which cause stress, and which can diminish physical and emotional health, you will gain effective tools for dealing with the challenges life brings. This course will teach you to identify stress triggers, understand and experience how these affect your mind and body, and develop mindfulness practices to bring about the change to lead you to more ease and balance as you learn to manage stress and life in a new way. That said, MBSR it isn't a magic wand to instantly remove the stress from your life or bring everything back into balance overnight.
The course schedule consists of eight weekly classes (about 2.5 hours each) and one day-long retreat on a weekend. In this highly participatory and practical course, the series unfolds to include:
Sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful movement (gentle Hatha yoga) and the body scan
Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life
Individually tailored instruction
Daily home assignments
Guided audio streaming or downloads for home practice and a workbook
Throughout the program you will be consciously and systematically working with your own stress, pain and illness - and the challenges and demands of your everyday life. Engaging with this course teaches you to mobilize your own inner resources for learning, growing, and healing and can transform your relationship to stress. You will learn to access and cultivate your natural capacity to actively engage in caring for yourself and find greater balance, ease, and peace of mind.
Come to an orientation session (required and free of charge) to find out more about the course, what it involves, and the commitment you are asked to take on in the 8-week course. This session will help you decide if the course is right for you. Attending the orientation is not a commitment to sign up for the course.
Nancy Boros will lead the series and trained at both the University California San Diego Medical School and University of Massachusetts Medical School, where MBSR was developed. Please see Nancy's bio for more info.
